Why timing matters
Caffeine is a stimulant that blocks adenosine receptors in the brain, delaying the build-up of sleep pressure that makes you feel tired. It does not destroy adenosine — that chemical continues accumulating exactly as it would otherwise. When caffeine clears, the adenosine that has been building is still waiting, which is why the tiredness that follows caffeine wearing off often arrives suddenly.

A 100mg coffee at 3pm may still have 50mg active at 8pm and 25mg at 1am.
